How to protect my wool throws from moths?

Wool throws & blankets can be damaged by moths when they are not being used for some time and/or stored in some quiet storage place. Wool throws in some dark dry place with little human traffic is an ideal place for moths to lay their eggs there. The wool larvae then develop from the eggs and they will feed on the wool making the damage to your throw or blanket or any other wool item.

To avoid this you should use airtight storage bags to keep your wool throws when you are not using them for longer intervals of time. It unlikely though, a moth damage would occur you put your wool throws away for just a little bit at time. To be on the safe side, always store them completely cleaned and brushed.

Be sure no wetness or dampness is left on your wool throws & blankets while storing them as this increases chances to get moth damage greatly.

Chemical solutions, such as moth balls, for protecting your wool throws also work. Moth repellent spray can also be applied before storing your wool items but this is only recommended if you are going to store them for an extended amount of time, not for a week or one month.

If you do suspect that moths have laid eggs on your wool throw, it is wise to brush them clean or to be sure of getting rid of them take your wool blanket to a dry cleaner.

Can I repair moth damage and/or holes?

If, in spite of all your efforts to prevent moth damage, your wool throw got moth holes, it is possible to repair it but the method is pricey and not completely practical.

The wool reweaving process is used to fix moth holes on your wool throw. This means that any damaged area will have to be replaced by new yarn which is very difficult if the throw is very detailed. Reweaving is also some sort of art, so it may be difficult to find someone who can do this for you.

So reweaving is naturally worth the money and effort only the wool blanket or throw was very expensive or very treasured to you.

It’s much easier and wiser to avoid moth damage by just taking some precautionary measures.
